Generations come together for VE Day Garden Party

by Gemma Melling

72 Newton-le-Willows residents aged 65 and over were invited along to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day at a special garden party held by local young people.

The VE Day 80 Garden Party, organised by Business for Youth, took place on Sunday, 11 May at their headquarters on Sturgess Street in Earlestown.

The free community event brought together old and young to celebrate this significant historical milestone, with great entertainment, good food and lots of smiles, laughs and singing along the way.

Guests enjoyed cream teas served by local children, took part in fun quizzes and trivia games, and had that chance to win prizes in a raffle. Local singer Kerrie Ann Lomas treated the guests to a performance of some favourite music, too.

Thanks went to ADS Marquees for supplying the marquee used to host the party. And didn’t it look fantastic – thanks to the 13 hours spent by the young people and Business for Youth volunteers who helped dress it and set up for the celebrations.

The party forms part of nationwide commemorations marking 80 years since Victory in Europe Day on 8 May 1945, when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe during the Second World War.

Well done everyone, what a lovely day!
