British Championships is great experience for ambitious gymnasts

Two partnerships from Newton-le-Willows’ Hope Acrobatic Gymnastic Club headed to the Telford International Centre for the British Acrobatic Gymnastics Championship last weekend.

The competition was fierce with the selection for the Great Britain squad in upcoming international competitions up for grabs. In such exalted company, the Hope gymnasts hoped to put on a good show and test themselves against the best.

Saturday saw the qualification round with Mia Ellison, Madi Corless and Lola Sitko taking to the floor in the 11-16 Women’s Groups. After an uncharacteristic mistake in their Dynamic routine, the trio were on the back foot with points to make up. They regained their composure in the Balance routine and displayed their customary style and poise to claw themselves back into the reckoning. It wasn’t to be, however, as they finished in an agonizing 9th place to just miss out on the top eight final.

Next up were Betty Prescott and Emma Green in the 11-16 Women’s Pairs. A beautiful Dynamic routine saw them in 4th place before dropping to 5th after the Balance round which saw them safely through to Sunday’s final. With Prescott struggling with an injury, the pair  fought hard in their final routine and ended the compettion in 5th place in their first national championships as a pair.

Coach Sean Kilmurray was philosophical after the event: “It was an amazing standard with literally some of the best gymnasts in the world at this level pushing for GB selection. It was a great experience and a good indication of how hard we need to work to get where we want to be. The girls conducted themselves in exemplary fashion and we move on a little wiser and more experienced”.
