Cheers! Beer Festival raises 10k for good causes

by Gemma Melling

Hundreds of real ale fans flocked to the annual Newton Beer Festival this April, enjoying a tempting selection of beers, wines and proseccos.

And as well as raising a glass, the drinkers also raised more than £10,000 for good causes.

The annual event is organised by Newton Rotary Club, and this year took place between 11 – 13 April at Newton Sports Club, on Crow Lane East.

The event got off to a dramatic start, after vandals caused thousands of pounds worth of damage on the eve of the festival, by breaking into the site the night before it was due to start and slashing the marquees.

Devastated event organisers appealed for help to find those responsible – but vowed that the show would go on… which it certainly did!

Hundreds of revellers enjoyed sampling some incredible beers and ciders, and there was some great live music and hot food, too.

Craig Roberts, president of the Rotary Club, said: “Despite the deliberate act of sabotage against our marquee, the Newton Beer Festival went ahead as planned. This raised in excess of £10K for charities and needy causes.

“Visitors turned up in droves to enjoy the atmosphere and real ales. In fact so many thirsty locals came that we had achieved our target and sold all our beer by Saturday evening!

“The vandals have not put us off and we are already planning a bigger and better event next year, with more beer of course.”
