Fibromyalgia support group launches in Newton

by Gemma Melling

A new support group for people living with fibromyalgia and chronic pain has launched in Newton-le-Willows, offering a safe and welcoming space for those affected by the condition to connect with others who understand what they’re going through.

Fibro Fight Club meets every Saturday at Newton Community Centre from 11am – 12pm and is open to anyone affected by fibromyalgia or chronic pain.

The group was set up by local man Stephen Cummings, who moved to Newton-le-Willows last summer and has seen first-hand the impact fibromyalgia can have through his partner’s experience with the condition.

Stephen said: “Many people live with severe pain, exhaustion and cognitive difficulties while being told they don’t look ill. For many, the isolation can be just as debilitating as the symptoms themselves.”

He added: “Our aim is simple but vital — to remind people living with invisible illness that their experiences are real, their voices matter, and support exists locally.”

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes pain and fatigue across the body, and is estimated to affect between two and five per cent of the UK population.

If you are interested to go along to the Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Group, you can just turn up at their next get-together, or contact Stephen via email: fibrofightclubnewton@gmail.com.

Stephen is also preparing to take on the Manchester Marathon on Sunday, 19 April, raising money for Fibromyalgia Action UK — a volunteer-run charity which supports more than 100 support groups and helplines across the country and campaigns to improve the way fibromyalgia is diagnosed and treated.

He said: “When you are with a person, it is through sickness and health. Looking after my family is my responsibility. I’m doing this to raise awareness and educate people on just how much fibro can affect people’s lives.”
