Haydock Male Voice Choir enters a new era in 2025 with the appointment of a new Musical Director.
Nicole Boardman will become the Choir’s first female Musical Director in its 100+ year history.
The Choir was founded in Haydock in 1923 and has enjoyed great success throughout its history, performing in national and international competitions. In 2019, at the Isle of Man Festival of Choirs, Haydock Male Voice Choir won the top prize of ‘Choir of the Festival.’
Nicole Boardman, the new Musical Director from January 2025, is a professional opera singer based in St Helens. Nicole brings a wealth of experience to the role and has worked with the Welsh National Opera and the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company amongst others. She has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall, including at the Last Night of the Proms.

Nicole said “I’m really looking forward to starting with the Choir and to continuing the high standard set by the current Musical Director, Dan Craddock. I’d really encourage any male voice singers from St Helens and beyond to come along to a rehearsal to hear the choir sing, and to see if joining the choir is right for them.
We’ll be starting a new programme in January, so it’s an ideal time to join. Singing as part of a choir brings great benefits, including for health and wellbeing, socially, and for inclusion as part of a like-minded community.”
Join Haydock Male Voice Choir – Weekly Rehearsals in St Helens
Haydock Male Voice Choir is a group of male singers from St Helens and beyond who meet for rehearsals on Tuesdays from 7-9pm at the United Reformed Church, Ormskirk Street, St Helens, WA10 2JZ. The first rehearsal of 2025 will be on Tuesday 7 January.
You do need to be able to hold a tune but you don’t need to be a musical prodigy to join the choir. The choir’s professional music team and the friendly choir members themselves can help you on your choir journey and help you to learn singing techniques. There is even a website for members with tracks that you can practise to at home.
Singing is great for wellbeing and joining a choir is a great way to meet new friends and feel part of a community. It’s also open to all ages – the choir has members from ages 19 to 95.
If you’d like to find out more then you can contact the Choir Secretary Graham Melling on secretary@haydockmvc.com or simply attend a rehearsal taster session where you can see what the choir is all about.
