Newton-le-Willows’ Hope Acrobatic Gymnastics club travelled south to Sunbury-on-Thames compete at the latest renewal of the Spelthorne Acro Cup. It was a huge weekend of success for the club at one of the premier gymnastic events in the UK.

Daisy Kay and Libby Williams stole the show in the Grade 3 Women’s Pairs. A stunning performance saw them post a score of 27.100 early in the competition which was not to be beaten by any of their thirty rivals. Their gold medal winning performance was rewarded further with the trophy for the highest score of the day.

Betty Prescott and Emma Green fought out a thrilling battle for gold with a partnership from the host club in the Grade 5 Women’s Pair. Well clear of the rest of the category, the Hope pair trailed the hot favourites from Spelthorne by just 0.05 in second place after the Balance routine section. The performance of a lifetime in the Dynamic routine saw them claim gold with a personal best score of 52.250, edging out their rivals by 0.1.

Hope dominated the Grade 3 Women’s Group category. Alice Pownall, Hannah Gannon and Daisy Denmade’s dramatic routine saw them secure an impressive victory, with clubmates Hattie Lloyd, Eva Booth and Skylah Malaney joining them in the podium with a superb bronze.

There was a near miss in the Grade 4 Women’s Group, with Isla Cook, Ava Earley and Luna Tootle finishing in 4th place in a big category of 24 partnerships. Isabel Rummery, Freya Cross and Amelia Harper also put in a confident display to finish a highly creditable 7th.

In the IDP1 Women’s Group, Holly Williams, Darcey Cassidy and Rosie Kay impressed with two solid routines, finishing 3rd in the Balance competition and 4th in Dynamic for a 4th place finish overall.

Competing in their first event as a pair, Mia Ellison and Lola Sitko showed huge potential as they secured a joint-5th placing from 24 rivals in the Youth Women’s Pairs.

Next stop for Hope is the North West Prelims at Robin Park in Wigan, with gymnasts aiming to qualify for the national finals in May.
