Something extraordinary is brewing at Wargrave Coffee House – and it’s not just the coffee!
Wargrave House School was presented with the Global Citizen Gold Award at the Engage in Their Future Awards Ceremony on Thursday, 5 March, in recognition of the Wargrave Coffee House – a real, working cafe run by learners alongside staff.
The project gives autistic young people aged 5 to 16 hands-on experience in hospitality, helping them develop teamwork, confidence and a sense of responsibility in a supportive, real-world setting. Learners are involved in every aspect of running the coffee house, from recruitment and training to day-to-day operations.
Interim Headteacher Juliet Doherty said: “I am immensely proud to have attended the National Engage Awards and celebrate our learners’ achievements. The staff at Wargrave House School are tireless in the support of all autistic learners at the school and the success with these awards are a testament to their dedication, creativity and inclusivity.”
Class teacher and coffee shop manager Lucy Cassili added: “From when the shop first started, the students have taken real ownership of the coffee house and have grown hugely in confidence, teamwork and professionalism. Seeing them share their story on BBC Radio Merseyside and now the Engage in Their Future Awards was a fantastic moment.”
The ceremony also recognised individual achievement. Learner Jace received the Bronze Award for Biggest Journey, celebrating his remarkable personal and academic growth over the past year. He said: “I felt really happy to win the award. I enjoy making the coffee and drinks in the cafe. The people I work with are really nice.”

Fellow learners were equally proud. Flo said: “I feel proud. I’ve made new friends. We do great teamwork. It’s giving us new opportunities and experiences. I felt astonished to be a gold award winner.” Marcus added: “It felt nice in general to be there with the people I work with in the coffee shop. It’s good to be part of a team. We all work hard.”
Wargrave House School is part of the Remarkable Group, a charity dedicated to helping autistic individuals lead happy, fulfilling lives.
