Newton gymnasts kick off new season in style

by Gemma Melling

The new season began for the gymnasts of Newton-le-Willows’ Hope Acro as a small team travelled south to compete in the Bristol International Acro Cup. Three partnerships faced gymnasts from across Europe in the highly prestigious competition.

Saturday saw Mia Ellison, Madison Corless and Lola Sitko take the floor in the 11-16 Women’s Group category. A performance of strength and poise saw them in second place after the Balance round. Their high energy Dynamic routine lit up the arena and earned them a comfortable qualification into Sunday’s final, maintaining their second place on the leaderboard behind their British rivals from Heathrow Gymnastics and well clear of the Austrian trio from Sportakrobatik Krems in third.

The Hope trio knew a clean performance in the final would guarantee a medal and they duly obliged. A display of style and panache saw them briefly lead, but a great performance from the Heathrow trio saw them finish in second place and a superb silver medal.

Team Hope after their successful weekend.

In the Youth Women’s Pair Category, Hope had two new partnerships competing as a pair. Ellie-Rose Fenney and Lois Preston were first up early in the competition and their spellbinding routine saw them in 2nd place in the standings. Betty Prescott and Rosie Kay followed and produced a beautiful display to tuck in just behind in 3rd. It would be a long wait to see if the Hope gymnasts could hold on to their medal positions in a high quality field.

As the competition came to an end, Fenney and Preston held on to claim a fantastic bronze medal behind the pairs from the GDS Cascais club in Portugal, and the KT Aalst club from Belgium. Sadly, Prescott and Kay were edged out into 4th place by a tiny margin of 0.1 but can be rightly proud of a fantastic performance in their first competition as a pair.

Next week, Hope Acro are back in action in Bristol again as the rest of the squad take part in the NDP Grades competition.
