Newton pub reopens after £300k ‘transformation’

by Gemma Melling

The results of a major revamp costing more than £300,000 have been revealed  at a prominent Newton-le-Willows pub.

The Old Crow Inn reopened with new management and a completely new look on Thursday, 24 July – and enjoyed a bumper weekend with locals flocking to find out what’s new.

The investment at The Old Crow Inn on Crow Lane East has been carried out by Heineken-owned Star Pubs, with the aim of transforming it into a “top-notch family friendly local”. And to welcome in the new era, the pub has new management, too: Warrington born-and-bred Sam Attwood – a former resident of Newton-le-Willows and her partner Andy Jones.

The work at The Old Crow Inn began on Monday, 9 June, and the revamp has created 10 new jobs.

Sam said: “I wanted to move back closer to home and family and friends and we’d been looking for a pub in the Newton-le-Willows area for some time.

“Andy and I both love sports and food and enjoy working in entertainment, so The Old Crow Inn is perfect for us, and we jumped at the chance to run it. We can’t wait to open the doors and show people their new-look local.”

What’s new The Old Crow Inn?

The external works have completely restored the outside of the tired pub, repainting the building in a classic navy and cream and adding new signage and lighting, enhancing the neighbourhood. The rear garden has also had a makeover, adding four six-seater pods for year-round use, with smart new furniture seating 84 people.

The extensive redecoration programme has upgraded the dated interior throughout with a stylish décor that is sympathetic to the building’s character. Distinctive features such as the stone floors, old beams and horseshoe bar have been renovated and retained alongside new furniture, carpets and soft furnishings.

The Crow Inn now has a comfortable lounge / dining area, a spacious bar with ‘sports zone’ including a new pool table and a halo-lit darts boards with electronic scoring. A new high spec AV system has six screens showing Sky & TNT Sports.

The installation of a kitchen now enables The Old Crow Inn to introduce all-day food. The menu will have a wide selection of dishes including burgers, pizzas, curries and pub classics, like steak & ale pie and fish & chips as well as options for children. The drinks range will be equally varied spanning craft beer, cocktails and fresh coffee.

Now The Old Crow Inn aims to be back on the map as a hub of the community, and there are plans to host events including live music, poker evenings and quiz nights, as a well as sports screenings and pool and darts teams.

Star Pubs investment manager Andy Bowden said: “We’re delighted to be investing in The Crow Inn and changing its offer to give it a new lease of life. The refurbishment will give the pub a much broader appeal and help it thrive for the long term.”
