Newton stands ready to support Afghan refugees

With an unfolding crisis in Afghanistan, and refugees now arriving in the UK, a community group in Newton-le-Willows is leading the local charge to provide help.

Newton and Earlestown Community Group (NECG) have issued an appeal for donations to help them make up parcels of essentials for individuals and families who may now have very little.

Among the items that are needed are:

  • Men and boys coats (especially small and medium sizes)
  • Jogging bottoms or jeans, size 26-34 waist
  • New boxer shorts
  • Hoodies and jumpers
  • Waterproof walking boots, sizes 38-45 (most needed are sizes 40-43)
  • Unlocked mobile phones with chargers
  • Powerbanks
  • Backpacks
  • Toiletries
  • T-shirts
  • Trainers

Also food donations, including:

  • Fried fruit and nuts (especially dates)
  • UHT milk
  • Sugar
  • Biscuits
  • Cakes
  • Coffee
  • Tinned food
  • Cooking oil
  • Black and green tea
  • Eggs
  • Long life fruit juice
  • Red lentils

Clothes can be dropped off at Newton Community Centre, Park Road South, on Thursdays until 5pm, Friday until 3pm, Saturday between 10-12midday.

Food items can be donated at Tesco in Earlestown. The collection point is near the entrance, clearly marked.

If you want to donate items other than food, please post on the NECG Helping Hands Facebook group and they will arrange for someone to collect from your home.

The first donations will be getting taken to the collection point on Sunday 22nd August, so please drop off your items before 10pm on Saturday, 21 August.
