Ofsted’s verdict on Wargrave Primary: A happy school where children love to read

by Gemma Melling

Congratulations to Wargrave C of E Primary, who’ve just had a fantastic report from Ofsted, who said pupils at the school are “happy and safe”, whilst staff are “proud” to work there.

The church of England primary, located on Bradlegh Road, Newton-le-Willows, was judged to be ‘Good’ in all areas after the inspection in November.

Inspectors found that the school has high expectations for its pupils, and that behaviour is good, with pupils full engaged in their lessons without disruptions.

There was particular praise for the way the school helps develop pupils’ reading skills, saying “a love of reading is evident throughout this school.” Inspectors said that children in the nursery class and the two-year-old provision “get off to a flying start”, and that by the time the reach Reception, they are really ready to learn with phonics. Inspectors noted that most Wargrave Primary pupils are fluent readers by the end of Year 2, with staff quickly identifying and supporting any children who struggle.

Ofsted said pupils with Special Educational Needs and / or Disabilities (SEND) are “nurtured and championed” at Wargrave Primary, achieve well and “join in with their classmates in all aspects of school life.”

Pupils also enjoy taking part in lots of community work, for example reading and singing at a local old people’s home and hosting an annual schools’ rugby tournament – which impressed inspectors who said this was adding “considerable value” to their learning and development. In addition, Wargrave Primary pupils “embrace” all the trips, clubs and events on offer at the school and are excited to develop new skills in cooking, photography, cricket and more.

Ms Amanda Epstein, Headteacher of Wargrave Primary, said: “We could not be prouder of the fact that Ofsted have seen for themselves what we see every single day: children, families and staff doing things ‘The Wargrave Way’.

“We are delighted with the report as it has validated all of the hard work that has been done to make our school a place where children are ‘nurtured and championed’.”

Well done to everyone at Wargrave C of E Primary on such a lovely report!
