Praise for ‘superb’ Newton school after Outstanding inspection

by Gemma Melling

St Peter’s Church of England Primary School in Newton-le-Willows has been rated ‘Outstanding’ in all areas following their recent Ofsted inspection, maintaining their previously excellent judgement.

The school, on Birley Street, was inspected in January 2025, with inspectors concluding that “St Peter’s is a superb school and a happy place to learn.”

The report praised the school’s values of faith, hope, love and trust, which it said “inspire staff and pupils to the highest standards of behaviour.” The school’s curriculum, built around courage, oracy and enquiry, was highlighted as exceptional.

Inspectors were particularly impressed by pupils’ conduct, noting that “pupils’ behaviour and attitudes to learning are exemplary, whether adults are present or not.” The report found that pupils know their learning matters and are proud of their achievements, with this culture of success resulting in pupils who are keen to learn and attend school regularly.

Ofsted said the school’s curriculum was ambitious and that learning is delivered in creative ways which it said children found “irresistible”. This included projects based on real events locally, such as the redevelopment of former coal mining land at Parkside. Inspectors said: “Leaders have established an exceptional curriculum for pupils to study. The school places no limits on pupils’ development. Pupils acquire deep knowledge of the subjects that they study.”

The quality of early years provision was also praised, with the report noting: “Children in the early years grasp phonics quickly. Adults expertly teach Reception-age children to read. Children become fluent readers.”

The school’s provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) was also highlighted for praise, with inspectors noting that “the support that pupils with SEND receive is exemplary. They master new knowledge quickly and use this independently. They achieve extraordinarily well.”

Paul Robinson, Headteacher at St Peter’s CofE Primary School, said: “We are absolutely thrilled at this outstanding outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection. It acknowledges the commitment, determination, and desire of our whole school community to ensure each and every one of our pupils flourishes.”

“At St Peter’s, we talk about each child growing in body, mind and spirit and it is wonderful for Ofsted to recognise how much our children succeed not only academically, but in their nurture and personal development.”

Congratulations to everyone at St Peter’s Church of England Primary School on this truly “outstanding” achievement!
