Rail freight interchange – second consultation opens

by Gemma Melling

Residents are being invited to view and comment on updated proposals for a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange planned for land east of Newton-le-Willows, with several local consultation events taking place in the coming weeks.

Intermodal Logistics Park North Ltd (ILPN Ltd), owned by Tritax Big Box REIT plc, has launched its second round of consultation on the Intermodal Logistics Park North Rail Freight Interchange (ILPN RFI). The consultation runs from Tuesday, 28 October until Tuesday, 23 December.

The proposals include an intermodal rail terminal along with logistics accommodation and warehousing. Following an earlier informal consultation held earlier this year, the developer has used community feedback to shape the current plans.

The site hs been chosen due to its location between Liverpool and Manchester, to the east of M6 Junction 22 and near the M6/M62 interchange at Junction 21a. It sits adjacent to the West Coast Mainline and Liverpool to Manchester TransPennine rail infrastructure.

Andrew Dickman, Chairman at Tritax Big Box Developments, said: “These proposals include an allocated site and will be instrumental in connecting the North West to global markets. As part of Liverpool City Region’s Freeport, this development can unlock significant investment and create thousands of jobs, while delivering both economic and environmental freight solutions for the region.”
