Service marks VE Day in Earlestown

by Gemma Melling

A service of remembrance took place in Earlestown this week to mark 79 years since the end of World War Two.

On Wednesday, 9 May 2024, a service was conducted at the War Memorial in Earlestown, with members of the Newton and District Veterans in attendance. There was a small parade and the group were joined by members of the local community, keen to pay their respects.

Victory in Europe Day – also known as VE Day – celebrates the date when Allied Forces accepted the Nazi’s unconditional surrender from World War 2, with the final document signed on 8 May 1945.

Following a short service at the War Memorial, the veterans also visited Earlestown’s Garden of Remembrance, which is tended year round by members of the group, helped by young people from Business for Youth.
