If your child is due to start primary school next September, or will be moving up to high school in the next year or so, you may be interested to find out more about which school will be right for you.
Over the coming months, our local primary and secondary schools will be opening their doors to prospective pupils and parents, to show you what they have to offer.
With luck, it’ll be the first time ‘in-person’ open days have been held in schools for two years, so it’ll be a fantastic chance to visit the settings and find out more about the ethos and atmosphere of each.
So, when do the local school open days take place?
High School open days
Hope Academy in Newton-le-Willows will be hosting both an Open Day and tours of the academy, on different dates over the coming week.
When: The Open Day takes place on Saturday, 25 September 2021, from 9am – 1pm. Meanwhile, tours of the Academy are on Monday, 27 September 2021 and Thursday 21 October 2021 between 9.30am – 3pm.

Haydock High School
When: The open day takes place on Thursday, 16 September 2021, from 5.30pm – 8pm.

Byrchall High, Aston-in-Makerfield
When: The Byrchall High open evening takes place on Tuesday, 12 October 2021 from 6.30-8.30pm.

St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School, Ashton-in-Makerfield
When: An open evening for Year 6 parents and prospective pupils takes place on Wednesday, 22 September, 2021 from 4.30pm – 7.30pm. There will be an address from the head teacher at 4.30pm; 5.15pm; 6pm and 6.45pm.

When are the deadlines for applying for a school place?
If your child is due to start at a new school next September, applications are now open for secondary schools, whilst primary admissions open soon.
You must apply before 31 October 2021 for a secondary place for next year. You will find out which place you’ve been offered on 1 March 2022.
In Year 10 or 11 and considering future options?
Make sure you don’t miss the School Leaver’s Open Event at St Helens College on 7 October, 2021.
It’s a valuable chance to explore and experience student life at St Helens College.
There will be plenty of tutors and students available to answer any questions that you may have about future careers, financial matters and the learning support available at the college.
There is also an opportunity to get involved with some exciting interactive activities and mini-taster sessions.
