Work begins this month on major Earlestown transport upgrades

by Gemma Melling

Foundation work will begin at the end of July for a comprehensive refurbishment of Earlestown bus station, with the revamped facility set to open in spring 2026.

The Lord Street bus station improvements are part of major transport upgrades coming to Earlestown, thanks to Government funding. Accessibility improvements to the railway station will also begin next year.

The bus station makeover will feature new weather-resistant shelters, enhanced tactile kerbs and contrasting flooring to help disabled and partially sighted users, plus upgraded road surfaces. Safety enhancements include new pedestrian crossings between Wetherspoons and the town centre, modern lighting and CCTV systems.

The timing couldn’t be better – St Helens borough becomes the first in Merseyside to bring bus services back under public ownership in September 2026, meaning passengers should benefit from both improved facilities and publicly-run services.

Meanwhile, Earlestown train station will finally become fully accessible when new lifts are installed during next year’s refurbishment. The lifts will go in alongside new bridges as the station gets its makeover, complete with a reopened ticket office and café. Even the station’s ‘triangle area’ is being transformed into community parkland.

The railway station is one of three major projects sharing £20m from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, topped up with £8m from St Helens Council. This larger-than-expected windfall from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement has made both transport upgrades possible.

All these improvements tie into Earlestown’s wider regeneration story, with the new town hall and market square enhancements also taking shape.
